Advantages of complexation magnesia alumina binder over phenolic resin
1. Chemical Composition
Because the phenolic resin contains carbon, the phenolic resin bonded products are not suitable for low carbon steel smelting. By contrast, the complexation magnesia alumina binder is carbon free and inorganic, so the complexation magnesia alumina binder bonded products are suitable for ultra-low carbon steel smelting.
2. Environment Protection
The complexation magnesia alumina binder is a non-toxic and environmental-friendly binder. The phenolic resin contains a large amount of benzene, damaging human health.
3. Operation
The mixing of complexation magnesia alumina binder with other raw materials is simple, only adding water. However, the mixing uniformity of phenolic resin and other materials shall be considered, especially in the winter: the phenolic resin must be dissolved in hot water, which brings some trouble.
4. Strength
The strength of the phenolic resin bonded products is 50-60 MPa. The strength of complexation magnesia alumina binder bonded products exceeds 100 MPa because sol-bonding of the complexation magnesia alumina binder ensures the strength of the unfired products at room, moderate and high temperatures.
5. The carbon-free ladle bricks prepared with the complexation magnesia alumina binder behave better than the pre-cast cement bonded carbon-free ladle blocks and machine shaped bricks bonded by organic binders (such as pulp, dextrin, brine, and MgSO4) .
The products using phenolic resin as binder need antioxidant commonly, increasing the cost; while the unfired products using complexation magnesia alumina binder don’t need antioxidant, reducing the cost.
